What should I do to maintain my pool during the winter if I don't want to use it?
We recommend that you follow the following guidelines to protect your pool during the colder months. This will help you save time and money when you want to use it again.
First of all, we do not recommend emptying your pool as, apart from the high economic and ecological cost, maintaining the water level prevents damage to the surface coating because the usual pressure exerted by the water on the walls is maintained. However, it is advisable to reduce the water level 5cm below the skimmers to protect them or to purchase a skimmer protector.
Even if you are not going to use your pool, you should measure the pH level of your pool and make sure it is between 7.2 and 7.6. You can adjust the levels by increasing or decreasing the pH level by adding the right product. Afterwards, you should perform a shock chlorination, adding 10g per m³ of water.
We also recommend that you run the pool cleaner through your pool, to prevent dirt from remaining in the pool throughout the winter season. We must make sure that the filter is kept clean.
The next day we must pour in winterising liquid to maintain the quality of the water throughout the season, 5 litres per 100m³ of water. It is advisable to repeat the operation in the middle of the season while the pool is not in use.
Don't forget to remove all the accessories from your pool to prevent them from getting damaged (Floating dispenser, Blue Extender, filters, pumps, thermometer, ladders, handrails...). It is also advisable to leave a hibernation float to prevent the ice from exerting too much pressure on your pool. At this time, we must add anti-algae.
Remember to always follow the manufacturer's instructions for any chemicals you add to the pool (regulators, chlorine, winteriser, algaecide, etc). If in doubt, ask the supplier or your maintenance professional.
Finally, to protect your pool water from algae, bacteria and dirt, and thus have a simpler and less costly set-up for next season, it is extremely recommendable to cover the pool with a winter cover suitable for your pool:
Winter cover for in-ground pools
Winter cover for above ground pools
By following these steps, your pool water will be perfect to enjoy when the good weather starts!
